why did you leave hong kong??
we have felt the Lord calling derek back to school for quite a few years already and God has finally opened the door for us to go in 2010! this is a very exciting time for us as it has always been on derek’s heart to continue his education after leaving umich so unexpectedly. we really believe in the call & giftings that God has placed on derek and this is a chance for him to be further trained as a pastor & teacher.
also after 10 years in hong kong, and having spent most of that time in ministry, both derek & janice felt that it was time to take a step back and see how God wants to use us more strategically in our areas of ministry.
so where did you go?
we left hong kong on June 17, 2010, to set out on our new journey of faith. currently we are in vancouver, canada, hanging out with janice’s family for the summer and getting some much needed r&r after 10 years of ministry. we will be moving to portland, oregon, in august to get ready to start school and our new american life!
how long will you be there for? will you come back to hong kong after that?
the program that derek is enrolled in is 3 years full time, so we will be in portland for at least that long. however, we felt we should leave the door open at the end of those 3 years. while we would love to come back to hong kong, we also recognize that God may have other plans in store for us and we’ll just have to wait and see!
how will you survive?
janice does plan to find a job (preferably in the area of social work) once we get to portland, so that will be our main source of income during derek’s study. we have also been blessed beyond belief by many people from the vine family and beyond who have generously given us significant one-time donations as well as commitments to monthly support. this has taken some pressure off of janice to find work right away.
while we only had 1 income and had not been able to save very much over the last 4 years (janice was in grad school full-time for 2 years and then we had ethan right after), our last weekend in hk has shown us how incredibly faithful our God is to provide what we need. He is truly jehovah jireh!
can we still give financial support?
yes! if you do deposit through the bank, we would really appreciate you letting us know so that we can keep track of things (and also thank God for you!!)
